Book Report: The Light and The Glory

The Light and the GloryHistory always seemed to have a boring connotation associated with it for me. U.S. history was especially confusing - all the dates seemed to be mixed up and isolated from each other. However, The Light and the Glory brought all the events of America’s early history together in an exciting new way from God’s perspective.

Rather than tediously recounting an overhwelming number of facts and dates, The Light and the Glory steps you through the thrilling years of America’s beginnings as God’s intricate plan for the young nation began to unfold. It clearly reveals how greatly she was blessed with divine intervention when her people committed to obeying God’s commands, and how lovingly He reproved her as they began to stray onto their own paths.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the series, and am looking forward with great anticipation to reading the other two: “From Sea to Shining Sea” and “Sounding Forth the Trumpet”.

A Hairy Beekeeping Adventure

It was a normal day. I had just finished counting mites on the beehives with Robert. It was a quick job so we didn’t bother to put on any bee equipment for protection. Big mistake. Buzzzz. I saw this bee coming straight for me as fast as greased lightning!

I screamed, tried to swat the bee before it stung me, and took off down the hill. But I could still hear the angry bee buzzing all around me as I ran onto the porch. Running inside and slamming the door, I stopped and listened. No!!! The buzz was still there. The bee had come inside with me!

I ran outside again .. and the buzz was still there! Then I ran back inside .. and the buzz was still there! It must have been stuck in my sweater!

By this time, Robert had come huffing and puffing down the hill and had finally caught up with me. He ripped off my sweater as I ran back inside for safety. But the ever-present haunting buzz of the dangerous bee was still there!!! Help!!!

Running outside once again, I realized it must be in my hair. Robert began beating me over the head trying to kill the bee before it stung me. David ran out to see what all the comotion was about and thought, “What is Robert doing hitting Jonathan on the head?”

Well, whether Robert killed the bee or it died of fright we aren’t sure. But we finally saw it fall dead to the ground. Hooray!!! I was so relieved that I hadn’t been stung.
The day continued as normal.

Creamed Tomatoes

The Lord has blessed our tomato plants abundantly this year! Thanks to Michael’s diligence, we have harvested over 200 pounds and they are still coming. David is the great biscuit maker around here and we love fixing our tomatoes this way and serving it warm over his biscuits. Enjoy!

  • 4 cups blended tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups milk (Use 1/2 cup of milk with 5 tablespoons corn starch.)
  • 1 t. salt
  • 2 T. butter
  • 1 T. honey

Bring tomatoes, 1 cup of milk, salt, butter and honey to a boil. Mix 1/2 cup milk and corn starch together. Add cornstarch mixture slowly to boiling tomatoes. Boil two minutes.

9-12 servings

Serve with biscuits and butter.

Working towards Life Focus

Today is the last day that Michael and James are going to be here at the farm for awhile. They’re heading off to Indianapolis for six weeks to be a part of Life Focus! We are really going to miss them and all the hard work that they do around here everyday.

Donald, Daniel, Esther, and Mom are all needed to fill Michael’s shoes as the gardener. David will be in charge of feeding our dog (Sentrina) and the deer. Donald will be taking over the mowing. And Robert and Jonathan are going to take care of managing all eight hives with close to 395,281 bees! (last we “counted”). In short, we’re all going to be busy as bees while they’re gone. However, it will be worth it all because of the different kind of work they will be doing at Life Focus.

Life Focus is a program to help young men who want to deepen their relationship with the Lord and their fathers. Please pray for Michael and James as the Lord brings them to your mind. And keep checking back for updates from them to see how the Lord blesses.
