Honor thy Father and thy Mother
Uncle Alan did this by turning his parent’s request for a porch roof into an item on his “to do” list. So last weekend found our family in Morgantown to help him with this project. By 7:00 am Dad, Michael, Daniel, Jonathan and David were on the roof with Uncle Alan. Their goal: A roof over Grandma and Grandpa’s back porch.
Before noon, it was 90 degrees up there in the sun. They had to get off the roof for 4 hours because of the heat. We enjoyed the time with Grandpa and Grandma as well as other friends and family who had come to enjoy a hot dog roast in the shade.
The men climbed back up that evening and the next morning to continue the work. Yes, it was hot but we were grateful for the opportunity to honor Dad’s parents. “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” Ex. 20:12
Good work everyone! That is exciting to see you all working so diligently and all together. I can’t believe how hot it was! For years to come, those who walk out on Grandma and Grandpas porch will appreciate your endurance and labor of love. Can’t wait to see it!

What a transformation! It looks like it took a lot of sweat and hard work but I know Grandpa and Grandma will really appreciate it. Like Josh said, it’s a perfect Father’s Day gift!
Alan did an excellent job of getting the needed materials prepared (built the trusses himself) and it was amazing how smoothly everything went: they made no wrong cuts, the plywood fit square and neat, plenty of help… One time we decided to take a break just before making a cut, and when we returned to make the cut we noticed that it was marked wrong. We were continually amazed how little waste we had as the boards were used right up to their last inch. It is a joy to work with Alan and Dad and Grandpa and Daniel, Jonathan, and David and the many others without whom it would have been impossible!
