A Real Field

Pretty, ain't it?Have you ever never mowed your lawn? Well, this year was the first time for us. No, it wasn’t intentional; it was just that our lawn mower kept breaking down and has thus been in the shop all summer. Of course we keep the grass around our house cut really nice (that is Jonathan’s job!) but as for the rest of the seven acres, we let it grow wild!

I don't know what kind, but it's a beetleIf you ask me, I think it is kind of nice to have a “real” field. It’s beautiful to see the grass waving back and forth as the wind blows down the valley. The color is simply spectacular too. When the late afternoon sun streams over the grass, the hillside glows with golden light. The tall grass also provides a great habitat for countless insects and wild flowers, which, in my opinion, are great photographic subjects. Of course, if you ever have to wade through it in the morning before the sun has time to dry up the dew, then there’s no way to keep from getting completely soaked. But what’s wrong with that?!

We are thankful for the backyard arboretum but we are still praying that the mower will be fixed soon. “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:18.

God’s Timetable

The first great thing about God’s timetable is that it includes things, basic, foundational things, that continue in repetition and never change. The second thing about God’s timetable is that there are other things, real life things, that He can change at will because He loves us and wants to teach us His character.

This Thursday was our grand opening and in the morning meeting, one simple command from Wes was “Be flexible”.

All through the week the team had already had multiple opportunities to demonstrate some flexibility as the press made its appearance many times, but this was the climax. Drum-roll, red carpet and banners were all in place. Just after 11:00 reporters, camera men and photographers entered the bank, one of four rooms that they highlighted. We were at a good point in the class routine though. A few more students practiced making a deposit and filling out a deposit slip for them to see. With about ten minutes left in the class we slowed down and took our time with those last students while the ones sitting down on the bank’s waiting benches answered questions for the reporters. Then we lined up and took the students out into the hallway. There, Mr. Lyons came to stay with them while the press interviewed the teachers. About five minutes later, we took the next class, coming in from the Library. It was great.

The first thing we normally do at the bank is have the students take a customer number printed by a computer near the door. Here I had time to give an introduction to the bank and talk about the value of saving money. The students were standing in a line while I stood not far from some of the remaining reporters. Soon after that they left and there were no major changes to our class schedule! We did it!

Another surprise today was a pleasant one. As the Martins moved into their new apartment, they found a suit in the closet. It had once belonged to the landlord, who worked for EVA airlines. Knowing that our aiport station was modeled after EVA, they gave us the suit, just like that! More often we wear casual attire during our classroom sessions but now, if the need arises, we’ll have a suit “well-suited” to the occaision.

So amidst the many things that happen (or don’t happen) pray with us that God would continue to exceed our expectations. On His timetable there is defintely repetition with variation! Like a rendition of Handle’s Messiah the work here is a joy for me to experience first-hand.

2007 Contests

Inside the car, David, Jonathan, Esther, and I were cozy and excited; a perfect contrast with the dark, stormy night outside! I had entered the Doddridge County Fair Amateur Photography Contest and now we were driving home from picking up my pictures from the fairgrounds. We were rejoicing over the unexpected outcome. I had entered one photograph into each of six categories and it was a blessing to discover that two actually won first place and another two won second place; now that was unexpected!

The second contest I entered was just as unpredicted but in perfect contrast to the first one. The Jackson’s Mill Arts and Crafts Jubilee Photography Contest was a little larger with hundreds more images being entered. Against these odds I didn’t do quite as well! I did not receive any prizes but I did receive experience. For almost an hour, I studied and analyzed the prizewinning photographs to gain insight on how I could do better next time.

I praise the Lord for the blessings and experience He gave me through these events. “Don’t let success plunge you to failure, and don’t let failure prohibit you from success.”

Working together to set posts in concreteFor the past two years the orchard has been expanding. It expanded so much, in fact, that half of it was located outside the original orchard fence! We had no choice but to also expand the electric fence, or face the possibility of being decimated by the ravages of wild beasts (deer). The whole project has been an outstanding example of availability on the part of many people.

Project planning and getting all the materials together was a job of its own that took a lot of rethinking due to our small level of experience. Taking time to pray and think carefully in the planning stages saved us a lot of trouble later on.

My brothers Donald, Robert, James, Daniel, and Jonathan and even my sister Esther pitched in to help dig the holes for the posts at the corners and gates and set them in concrete. This was the most labor-intensive part of the work. A visiting friend from Indiana, Clayton Rothenauser pitched in too.A corner. Notice the horizontal braces and the diagonal

Our wonderful neighbor and friend Randy Plaugher generously gave us the service of his tractor and post driver, as well as his precious time, to drive the rest of the fence posts. He even showed me an excellent method of bracing the end posts and corner posts to prevent the tight wires from pulling them in.

Gates must be braced like corners. We had to put in 4 gWhen it came time to put up the wire, more volunteers were there to help. Dad, Donald, Esther, Jonathan, David, and even cousin Tricia all contributed significantly to the success of the project. This was probably the most time consuming job. Thank you one and all for your endurance in the hot sun, your availability, generosity, and diligence. I know these virtues are a result of your submission to Christ, allowing His Spirit to conform you to His image. “According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue” 2 Peter 1:3. Grace and peace be multiplied to you!

Revival in the Northwoods!

Today was incredible! Over one hundred students from Verity College had gathered with Mr. Gothard to seek the Lord for a week in the beautiful Northwoods of Michigan.

After a day of delighting in the Lord through fasting, times alone in prayer, powerful preaching, study of the Word with others, and “entertaining” God, the Spirit of the Lord fell on the group in power. Over an hour of spontaneous life-changing testimonies brought many to tears and climaxed in a moving communion service. Praise God!

Sharing powerful testimonies

God has answered prayer in a powerful way! The joyful spirit of “one accord” was felt the entire rest of the evening as each one enjoyed fellowship during a delicious dinner at the dock, preaching on the lakeside as the sun set, and singing around the campfire. It was a powerful start to a tremendous school year at a college like none other!
